2 October 2005 PEACE CONFERENCE CONDEMNS BALI ATROCITYDelegates from Australia and Asia Pacific region attending a two-day regional Peace and Harmony Conference being held this weekend in Sydney expressed shock and dismay at the Bali bombings that occurred last night. The President of the Australian Federation of Islamic Councils, Dr Ameer Ali has been joined by the Deputy President of the Regional Islamic Da’wah Council of South East Asia and the Pacific, Mr Riduan Abdullah Wu of Singapore and the Presidents of the National Council of Churches in Australia, Revd Professor James Haire and the Executive Council of Australian Jewry, Mr Grahame Leonard in condemning this most abhorrent, despicable and outrageous act which has claimed the lives of more than 30 including one Australian and causing serious injury to scores of others. Most of the victims are Indonesian citizens. Conference being held at the Novotel Hotel in Darling Harbour observed a 1 minute silence to honour the victims of the bomb blasts before commencing this mornings session of the Conference. The delegates offered condolences to the victims, and their families an d friends. “Attacks against innocent persons are abhorrent to all peaceful people and to all faiths and those who engage in this behaviour stand condemned,” said Dr Ali on behalf of the Conference, adding that people of goodwill and faith must double their efforts and resources to fight against such acts of barbarism and inhumanity. Dr Ali urged the Australian Government to do all in its power to assist all the victims of this tragedy and the Indonesian Government to bring the perpetrators of this heinous crime to justice.
