05 August 2005 AUSTRALIAN MUSLIMS REJECT EXTREMISTS AMONG THEM The President of the Australian Federation of Islamic Councils, Dr Ameer Ali said that he was dismayed at the outrageous comments made by Abdul Nacer Benbrika of Melbourne. Dr Ali said that all Muslims in Australia condemned and rejected those extremist views which were against the teachings of Islam. Dr Ali added that most Muslims even in Victoria had not heard of this person who was seeking publicity. The views expressed by this individual do not reflect the views of the vast majority of Muslims in Australia. Dr Ali further said that the media attention was helping to perpetuate such individuals and views and called upon the media not to provide publicity to such views. He said that the former British Prime Minister Mrs Margaret Thatcher had astutely advised the media that extremists which included terrorists were thriving on publicity and if this publicity was denied extremism and terrorism could easily be arrested.
