16 June 2005 MUSLIMS EXPRESS JOY AT HOSTAGE RELEASE The President of the Australian Federation of Islamic Councils (AFIC), Dr Ameer Ali expressed joy and happiness at the good news of the release of Douglas Wood from his captors in Iraq. Dr Ameer Ali said that this was achieved through the persistent effort of many people from Australia but most importantly the fortitude shown by the Wood family in Australia. The pleas of the wood family moved all those who saw their appeal including the Muslims of Australia who rallied with them to seek the release of Douglas Wood. Dr Ali said that he wanted to express his gratitude to all those people in Australia and especially to Mufti Sheikh Tageddine El-Hillaly for his personal effort to go to Iraq in spite of ailing health and great personal risk. Dr Ali appealed to the Australian and Coalition authorities to conduct themselves in Iraq in such manner that would win the support of the Iraqi people. He called on all sides to seek to resolve the outstanding issues in Iraq and in the Middle East in general in a compassionate and humanitarian manner. The President of
