23 April 2009 - Asylum seekers boat tragedy
23 April 2009 Asylum Seeker’s Boat Tragedy The President of the Australian Federation of Islamic Councils (AFIC), Mr Ikebal Adam Patel expressed his condolences to the families of those killed aboard the SEIV 36 and prayed for the recovery of those who have been injured. Mr Patel had requested to halt the speculation about the cause of explosion aboard the SEIV 36. This speculation was based on rumour rather than fact. It is particularly distressing to the Afghan community in Australia and the family of the deceased who wants to carry on with the funeral as soon as possible according to the requirement of Islam. Mr Patel expressed his confidence in the Northern Territory Police and stated that he was certain that they would conduct a professional investigation that will reveal what actually happened to the SIEV 36. Mr Patel expressed concern that some irresponsible sections of the media had referred to the asylum seekers as illegal immigrants. He emphasised that the people on board the SIEV 36 had not broken any law by entering Australian waters and that they have a legal right to have their claims for refugee status assessed by appropriate authorities. He further mentioned that Asylum seekers and refugees flee to othercountries in the hope of getting sanctuary most of them are fleeing political or religious persecution, torture and repressive regimes, escaping from conflict and war and searching for a better life and greenerpastures. The AFIC President also stated that until now 7 boats containing asylum seekers had arrived this year. He noted that all of the persons on board the first three boats had been assessed as being refugees. He remarked that increased refugee arrivals was a consequence of the deteriorating security situation in Afghanistan, Iraq and other places and this trend will continue until the underlying conflict is resolved.
