1 June 2009 - Attacks on Overseas Students Condemned
The Australian Federation of Islamic Councils President, Mr Ikebal Adam Patel condemned a wave of attacks on overseas students and said that he has been appalled that these incidents could be occurring in this day and age.
After the events of 11th September 2001 and the harsh treatment meted out to foreign students by the USA and England’s border protection agencies in the areas of profiling of individuals, Australia was considered a country of choice because of our laid back attitude and inviting and welcoming people. This was especially the case for the Muslim students who were warmly welcomed by the Universities during the recent past tough budgetary constraints.
Mr Patel urged upon the Australian authorities to ensure the well-being and security of overseas students. The recent spate of attacks on Indian students and others is to be condemned in the strongest terms. Our thoughts and prayers are with the victims and their families as well as with other students in Australia who may be traumatized with these events and contemplating their options.
He further stated that Australia is a modern democratic country which has prospered as a result of diverse cultures. The presence of overseas student should be exploited to further enhance Australian economy in these tough times. This is the only way to move forward in an enlightened manner in this beacon of multiculturalism.
