1 June 2009 - Australian Muslims Urge Asylum for Uyghurs
The President of the Australian Federation of Islamic Councils (AFIC) calls upon the Australian Government to grant Asylum to the Uyghurs detained in Guantanamo Bay military prison.
Mr Patel said that during this period of need by its closest friend, Australia should assist the United States of America and its new President Mr Obama restore decency and humanity by closing the Guantanamo Bay military prison and rid the world of any association with this despicable period for in our life time.
In recent years, China has used antiterrorism efforts as an excuse to repress and persecute Uyghurs. Many Uyghurs seek independence from China, but human rights groups note that most Uyghur groups do not advocate violence and have been cleared as a national threat to the US and its allies and are not terrorists.
Mr Patel further added that it is Australia’s moral and humanitarian duty to help people who have already suffered physically and psychologically in Guantanamo Bay. If fighting terrorism is a global issue than helping the victims of this war is as much an obligation for the whole of humanity.
These people who have been incarcerated for a very long time without any charges and have now been cleared of any wrong doing by the very best intelligence of the United States of America should not pose any security threat to Australia.
There is a very large community of Uyghurs in Australia who are willing and able to offer these victims of the War on Terror all the required support. Not granting these individuals asylum in Australia is to endanger their life which is against the moral stance which Australia is famous for.
