4 August 2009 - Police Terror Raids in Melbourne
The President of the Australian Federation of Islamic Councils, Mr. Ikebal Patel commenting on counter – terrorism raids, by the Federal and Victoria Police in Melbourne this morning expressed concern at the threat of safety and security of Australian citizens.
Mr. Patel indicated that the Federation and its State Councils will continue to work with law enforcement agencies across Australia to ensure Australian’s safety is not compromised in any shape or form by any individual or groups who wish to import grievances and cause mayhem within Australia.
Mr. Patel said “ We as Muslims are all concerned about peace and harmony here in Australia. We chose to make this beautiful country our home and we will not allow a few to discredit the years of hard work and positive contributions Muslim Australians have made to this country”. Mr. Patel urged all members of the Australian Muslim community to support the work of the law enforcement agencies and to provide any relevant information to these authorities to ensure the safety of all citizens.
Mr. Patel appreciates comments made by Victorian Police Commissioner Simon Overland and Australian Federal Police acting Commissioner Tony Negus at their press conference in Melbourne this morning, in which Mr. Overland stressed that the overwhelming number of Muslim people in Australia and Melbourne were valued members of the community. Mr. Patel also welcomes similar sentiments from Prime Minister Mr. Kevin Rudd.
The President of the Australian Federation of Islamic Councils expressed confidence in Australia’s judicial system and asks all concerned to be cognizant of the fact that those accused of any criminal activity should be brought before the judiciary to determine their cases. Mr. Patel added, “ In these emotive cases, let us give the arrested the benefit of doubt and let the judicial process assess the innocence or guilt of the individuals.”
